Pioneers go 1-2 tournament

UW-Platteville defeated UW-Stout 3-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play-in game Friday morning at UW-Eau Claire, then dropped a pair of one-run games in the double-elimination portion of the tournament.

The ninth-seeded Pioneers fell 4-3 to top-seeded and 11th-ranked UW-Oshkosh and were eliminated by fifth-seed UW-Whitewater 7-6.

Maggie Medlicott threw a complete-game victory, allowing seven hits and no walks. Tera Burr doubled, Becky Swanson singled, and both scored on a fielder's choice and error in the Pioneer third. Stefany Delifer drove home an insurance run in the sixth with a single.

Against UW-Oshkosh, Burr singled and tripled, scoring runs in the first and third, while Lindsay Weigand homered in the sixth.

Burr led off the UW-Whitewater game with a home run, but the Warhawks rallied to take a 5-1 lead after three innings. Swanson doubled and scored on Dru Schneider's single in the fourth. Maggie Digman smashed a two-run home run, and Kiersten Henn added a two-run single in the fourth inning.

The Pioneers had two runners on base in the seventh, but the Warhawks turned Burr's hot line drive into a game-ending double play.

Digman's HR was her 12th of the season, a Pioneer record. UW-Platteville (11-28) became just the 13th team in NCAA III history to hit 40 home runs in a season. Burr and Nikki Hansen, with nine each, also surpassed the former UWP single-season record of eight.
