Pioneers lose heart-breaker

UW-Whitewater scored both runs with two outs in the seventh, handing UW-Platteville a 2-1 heartbreaking loss Thursday. The host Warhawks then completed the sweep, winning 10-8.

Amy Gehl hit a two-run home run, lifting the Warhawks to the game-one victory. Liz Yucious singled with one out in the seventh, and after an infield popup, Gehl homered to win the game.

The loss spoiled another solid game by Maggie Medlicott, who held UWW to eight hits and within one out of the shutout. UWP scored in the sixth, when Tera Burr singled, was bunted over to second by Nikki Hanson and scored on Becky Swanson's single.

The Warhawks survived a five-run Pioneer seventh to complete the sweep. Lindsay Weigand's three-run home run brought the Pioneers within 10-8, but Patty Meoska's fly ball to right was caught, ending the wild game.

Nikki Hansen homered in the first inning, helping the Pioneers to a 3-0 lead, but the Warhawks answered with four in the bottom of the inning and five more in the fourth. The Warhawks hit four home runs while improving to 16-8 overall and 4-4 in the WIAC. The Pioneers fell to 8-18, 1-7.

UW-Platteville plays host to UW-Stevens Point Monday and UW-La Crosse Wednesday. Both WIAC doubleheaders begin at 3 p.m.
