UW-Superior shut down UW-Platteville's potent offense on four hits in each game while sweeping a doubleheader from the visiting Pioneers, 3-0 and 11-2 Saturday.
The Yellowjackets used big first innings in both games to improve to 16-21 overall and 4-10 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. UWS scored two in the first in the opener and seven in the nightcap's initial inning. Walks, errors and wild pitches led to all seven runs in the second game, as UWS did not get a hit.
Nikki Hansen homered for the seventh time, highlighting the Pioneers' efforts on the day. Jodi Redlich had a home run in the first game for the Yellowjackets. Jen Reid pitched a compete-game victory in the opener, while Nichole Tessier threw all five innings in the second game, shortened because of the eight-run rule.
The Pioneers (8-22, 1-11) play at UW-Eau Claire Sunday.
