The UW-Platteville softball team opened its 2007 campaign by splitting two games against Minnesota schools during the Sun West games in Orange, Calif. The Pioneers beat Macalester 9-4 and lost 12-4 to Gustavus Adolphus.
Lindsay Weigand hit home runs in each game, finishing with five hits and seven runs driven in. She and Katie Kereven each hit two-run doubles in the fourth inning of the opener, breaking a 2-2 tie. Nikki Hansen had a pair of hits, while Maggie Medlicott scattered 11 hits to earn the win. She struck out three batters and stranded 10 Scots on base.
Weigand and Maggie Digman each hit home runs in the second contest, with Weigand getting three hits, and Kiersten Henn two. Gustavus, however, had four extra-base hits among its 10 for the game and was helped by 10 wild pitches.
The Pioneers face Concordia, Neb. and Cortland State Monday as part of their 10-game trip.
