| Everyone is all smiles after Patty Meoska (center) hit the game-winning double |
UW-Platteville led for only one pitch Tuesday, but it was enough to earn a dramatic victory against Clarke at the UWP Softball Complex.
The Pioneers scored twice with two outs in the seventh to beat Clarke 4-3 in the first game of the doubleheader. The Crusaders came back to take the second contest 8-1.
After Crusader pitcher Jill Slater struck out the first two batters, Becky Swanson boomed a triple to right center and scored the tying run on Lindsay Weigand's single. Weigand moved to second on a wild pitch then scored the game-winner when Patty Meoska blasted a double to the right-center gap.
UWP's Maggie Digman hit her Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference-leading eighth home run in the fourth inning, tying the game at 2-2. Clarke went ahead 3-2 when Cassie Baker doubled and eventually scored on a ground-out in the fifth.
The Crusaders won the second game behind pitcher Leah Buls, who took a no-hitter into the fifth inning. Clarke also took advantage of five Pioneer errors, scoring five unearned runs.
The Pioneers are now 8-16 overall, while Clarke stands at 18-10.
UW-Platteville plays at UW-Whitewater Thursday, then plays host to UW-Stevens Point Monday and UW-La Crosse Wednesday, April 25. All three WIAC doubleheaders begin at 3 p.m.
