Wednesday was supposed to be a gorgeous day for UW-Platteville's home softball opener, with spring weather and highs in the upper 50s. While that never materialized, the Pioneers' opponent, Wartburg, was as good as advertised.
The Knights blasted eight home runs while beating the Pioneers 11-3 and 10-2 at a cold and windy UWP Softball Complex.
Wartburg improved to 19-3 on the season, while the Pioneers fell to 5-9.
The Knights hit four home runs in the five-inning opener. Ahley Orris singled and Stephanie Howe homered in both the first and third innings, giving Wartburg a 4-0 lead. Amy Daniels and Courtney Bain cleared the fences in the seven-run fifth inning.
The Pioneer runs came off the bat of junior outfielder Maggie Digman, who hit her first two career home runs. She hit a solo shot in the third and a two-run bomb in the fifth.
Daniels, Bain, Cari Kinzenbaw and Renae Vomacka hit home runs for Wartburg in second game, which ending after six innings because of the 10-run rule. Digman continued her hot hitting for UWP with two hits.
The Pioneers are off this weekend, returning to action Tuesday to face UW-Stevens Point in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener in Stevens Point. Their next home games are Saturday, April 8 vs UW-Superior and Sunday, April 9 vs. UW-Eau Claire. Both doubleheaders begin at noon.
