UW-Platteville shut down 17th-ranked UW-Stevens Point, stunning the host Pointers with 3-1 and 4-0 wins Tuesday in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
Katie Larson earned the victory in the first-game, raising her individual season mark to 4-4, while Maggie Medlicott pitched the shutout in the nightcap.
The Pioneers improved to 7-9 overall and 2-0 in the WIAC, while the Pointers fell to 10-5-1, 0-2.
Tera Burr had the first of her four hits in game one leading off the first inning, then scored on Abby Lalko's double. Lalko added a two-out, two-run single in the sixth to break a 1-1 tie. Burr was 4-4, while Lalko had three hits and all three RBIs.
Larson held the powerful Pointers to a season low for hits, as she twirled a three-hitter. Point's Kristin Konieczny hit a third-inning home run for the only blemish on Larson's gem.
In the second game, Medlicott tossed the first shutout of the season against UWSP, with help of the Pioneer defense. Madlicott scattered eight hits for her second Pioneer win. UWP committed just one error in each game.
Lalko, Nikki Hanson and Ashley Strnad each had two hits, with Strnad driving in runs in the first and third innings.
First-year Coach Heather Townsend sends her team back on the field for two more WIAC doubleheaders this weekend. The Pioneers play host to UW-Superior Saturday and UW-Eau Claire Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for noon both days. Saturday is also Jenny Walter Memorial Day, remembering the Pioneer infielder who was killed by a drunken driver in 1996.
