Hansen's homer lifts Pioneers

UW-Platteville's Nikki Hansen homered in the eighth inning, leading visiting UW-Platteville to a 7-5 extra-inning win over UW-River Falls Saturday. The host Falcons won the nightcap 6-2.

Tera Burr drove in the first run of the eighth with a sacrifice fly, and Hansen followed with a two-run home run, her first of the year. Mindy Rudiger homered in the bottom of the eighth, but that was all the Falcons would get off Pioneer pitcher Katie Larson, who threw a complete-game.

Lindsay Weigand hit a two-run home run in the Pioneer third, and both Ashley Strnad and Patty Meoska had two hits. Larson scattered seven hits over eight innings, improving to 8-8 on the year.

The Pioneers were limited to six hits in the nightcap, including another Hansen home run. Hansen and Becky Swanson each had two hits.

Following the doubleheader split, the Pioneers are 11-19 overall, 6-8 in the WIAC, while the Falcons are 17-15, 3-7.

UWP is back in action Sunday up north, playing UW-Stout at noon.
