Road Warriors split with Eagles

Maybe the UW-Platteville softball team should follow the lead of the Pioneer baseball team and play all its games away from home.

The Pioneers turned in their third straight impressive road performance, splitting with UW-La Crosse Wednesday. UWP took game one 4-1 before dropping a close 2-1 decision in the nightcap.

While the Pioneers are now 8-14 overall and 3-5 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, their performances on the road are in stark contrast to those at home. In true road games, the Pioneers are now 4-2, and the pitching staff has an ERA of 1.19, while at home, UWP is 0-6 with an ERA of 12.11.

True to form, the Pioneers came off the bus ready to play, jumping out to a 4-0 lead by the third inning. Tera Burr hit a two-run double in the third, while Katie Kereven batted in a run in the fourth.

Katie Larson allowed just five hits and one run over seven innings, improving her record to 5-6. Larson retired the final eight batters she faced to nail down the conference win.

The Eagles (13-11, 3-3 WIAC) nipped the Pioneers 2-1 in the second game, spoiling a strong effort by Maggie Medlicott, who threw a complete game. Maggie Digman hit a solo home run for the Pioneers in the second inning. Mary Santarelli tied the score with an RBI single in the fourth, while Jenny Miller brought home the go-ahead run with a two-out hit in the fifth.

Both teams stranded nine runners in the nightcap. Ashley Strnad had two hits in the second game for UWP, while Digman had two in the first.

The Pioneers will search for that first home victory Friday, when they play host to UW-Whitewater at 1 p.m.
