Pioneers drop pair to #9 Blugolds

Ninth-ranked UW-Eau Claire broke a 6-6 tie and went on to defeat UW-Platteville 15-6 in the second game of a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game Sunday at the UWP Softball Complex.

Mallory McKinney pitched a one-hitter, and the Blugolds set a conference record with seven home runs to win the opener, 10-0.

UWEC improved to 19-3 overall and 4-0 in conference play, while the Pioneers fell to 7-13, 2-4.

The Blugolds took a 6-0 lead in the top of the first in the second game, before the Pioneers came storming back to tie the score in the third. Tera Burr, Nikki Hansen, Becky Swanson and Abby Lalko had run-scoring hits in the second inning, and Swanson delivered a two-run double in the third, tying the score.

UW-Eau Claire pushed the go-ahead run in the top of the fourth, then exploded for eight runs on nine hits in the sixth inning.

Burr doubled to open the first game for the Pioneers, but that was the only hit McKinney surrendered all game. McKinney also hit two of the Blugolds' home runs in that contest.

The Pioneers return to action Wednesday at UW-La Crosse, then play host to UW-Whitewater Friday at 1 p.m.
