Pioneers finish with split, 7-9 record

UW-Platteville, picked for ninth (and last) place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference preseason poll, finished 7-9 in league play after splitting with UW-Stout Sunday.

First-year coach Heather Townsend's club beat the Blue Devils 6-1 in the opener and lost another 2-1 game in the nightcap.

Katie Larson threw a three-hitter, and the Pioneers used a four-run fifth inning to win the opener. Maggie Digman and Lindsay Weigand each had run-scoring hits in the big inning. Nikki Hansen added an RBI single in the sixth.

Maggie Medlicott was the hard-luck loser in the second game, despite yielding just six hits and no runs after the third inning. Medlicott has lost three games this season by that 2-1 score. Ashley Strnad had two hits, including one in the seventh to put two runners on. Digman's fly ball to center was caught to end the game.

The Pioneers, 12-20 overall, are off until May 1, when they play at Loras College to tune-up for the WIAC tournament. The nine conference schools get together at Stout May 5-6 to decide the league's representative to the NCAA Division III national championships.
