Loras takes Pioneers deep twice

Loras College used key home runs to defeat visiting UW-Platteville 3-2 and 10-5 Tuesday in the 2006 regular-season finale.

Jamie Wendt and Amanda Reiss both tied the Loras record with eight home runs in a season. Reiss hit a two-out three-run home run in the fifth inning of the opener for the only runs against Katie Larson. Wendt reached home run number eight with a three-run home run in the first inning of the nightcap, while Reiss tied the record with a three-run shot in the third.

The Duhawks improved to 15-23, while the Pioneers fell to 12-22.

Katie Jo Crubaugh (second inning) and Ashley Strnad (fifth) had RBI singles in the opener, staking the Pioneers to a 2-0 lead.

Becky Swanson blasted a home run for UWP in the second game, while Tera Burr, Strnad, Stefany Delifer and Swanson all had two hits apiece. The Pioneers were done in by six errors, making six of the 10 runs unearned. Maggie Medlicott took the loss, although was involved in one of the most memorable confrontations in some time. She dueled Reiss for 20 pitches, as the Duhawk batter fouled off 16 balls before Medlicott struck her out.

The Pioneers now move from Duhawks to Warhawks. UWP is the sixth seed in the upcoming Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament and will face third-seeded UW-Whitewater in the first round at UW-Stout. The Pioneers, who swept the Warhawks this season, try for their third win against their rivals Friday at 11 a.m. They will face either UW-Oshkosh or UW-Stevens Point in the second round of the double elimination tournament.
