UW-Platteville's Maggie Medlicott pitched the Pioneers to a 4-1 win over her former school, Concordia (Wis.), Thursday in Kissimmee, Fla.
Rhode Island College's Christie Lotti hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie and beat the Pioneers 3-2 in the second contest.
Medlicott, a sophomore from Neenah, played for Concordia as a freshman, winning her only start. On Thursday, she held the Falcons to three hits and a pair of walks. Maggie Digman and Nikki Hansen helped back her with a pair of hits apiece. Digman delivered a big two-run single in the Pioneers' three-run third inning.
UWP went for a sweep in the second game, holding a 1-0 lead until Rhode Island tied the score in the fourth. Lotti, who was 3-3 on the day, smashed a two-run home run in the fifth to break the tie. The Pioneers pushed across a run in the bottom of the seventh Becky Swanson singled, Tera Burr doubled and Hansen singled, but the game ended with runners on the corners. Pitcher Nicole Riley induced a strikeout and popup to end the rally.
Burr had three hits in the second game, including two doubles, while Hansen collected a pair of hits.
The Pioneers (4-4) conclude their trip with two games Saturday afternoon and early evening against Westminster and Ohio Wesleyan. Those games will be updated Monday after the team returns to Platteville.
