James resigns as Pioneer coach

Janet James has resigned as the UW-Platteville softball coach after eight seasons.

James recorded the most victories in Pioneer history, with a 134-179 record. She earned the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors after leading the Pioneers to the league championship in 2003. She also guided UWP to the 2001 WIAC East Division title.

"It was time to move on," James said. "I can't give the position what it needs and give time to my family. My priorities have shifted from my career to my family. We'll be moving to Minnesota, although I will never be a Vikings fan. Maybe the Twins, but never the Vikings."

A UWP graduate, James threw the first no-hitter in Pioneer history, against West New England on March 11, 1984. She returned to her alma mater as an assistant in 1997 and became the head coach in 1998.

"We thank Coach James for all she's done at UW-Platteville and wish her the best as she pursues other opportunities," Pioneer Athletic Director Mark Molesworth said.
