UW-Platteville and Marian University battled to a 2-2 tie Tuesday night in Fond du Lac to begin the 2009 women's soccer season.
The Sabres scored just 7:53 into the new year on a Brittany Graham goal, but the Pioneers tied the score 17 minutes later. Freshman Kimmy Trapp scored on an assist from senior Sarah Gengler, knotting the score at 1-1.
The tie remained until the 70:45 mark, when UWP junior Allie Metcalfe took a pass from freshman Marissa Mol and scored the go-ahead goal. Marian's Carly Saunders answered with the tying shot with just 2:16 to play. No overtimes were played in this non-conference matchup.
UWP out-shot the hosts 14-10, including 6-5 on goal. Newcomer Kaitlyn Wiedeman made three saves for the Pioneers, who play at the Wisconsin Lutheran tournament Friday and Saturday.
