For 64 minutes, UW-Platteville had visions of an improbable women's soccer upset in Saturday's home opener against Macalester.
The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Anna Strasser, assisted by Sarah Miller, just 12 minutes into the game. The well-played score, as it turned out, was UWP's only shot on goal of the game, and the Pioneers turned back Macalester try afer try until the Scots tied the score at the 78:10 mark. Kat Lenhart headed into a ball off a Maddie Mette corner kick, forcing overtime.
Just 30 seconds in the extra session, Emily Bardwell took a loose ball and went 50 yards, shooting the ball into the upper right part of the net for a 2-1 Scots win.
"It's frustrating because you hold a team of that caliber for so long and then give up the goal at the end," acting head coach Allison Sanyi said. "I know the girls are frustrated, but I'm happy with how we played. We did all right. It gives us some things to work on. But overall, it's a frustrating for not only the coaches but the players as well. Seeing them mad shows they have a passion within and they're playing with our heart."
The Scots outshot the Pioneers 30-5, including 13-1 on goal. Macalester improved to 3-0-1, while the Pioneers fell to 2-2-1.
Loras beat St. Thomas 1-0 in the first game at Pioneer Stadium. On Sunday, Macalaster plays at Loras, while St. Thomas faces UWP at 1 p.m. in Pioneer Stadium.
"Tomorrow, we need to bounce back and show we can lose one day but w'e're back to fight the next game," Sanyi said.
