Allison Sanyi is the acting head soccer coach at UW-Platteville, Athletic Director Mark Molesworth announced Monday.
Sanyi will coach both the Pioneer men's and women's team in place of Enzo Fuschino, who remains hospitalized in Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque after suffering a heart attack Aug. 1.
Fuschino has coached the Pioneers the last two seasons, with Sanyi joining him as his lead assistant last year.
"This is a very difficult time for all of us," Molesworth said. "We care deeply about Enzo and think of him every minute, every day. I have a great deal of confidence Allison can continue what Enzo has started. Our full support is behind Allison as well as with Enzo and his family."
Sanyi assisted in all aspects of the Pioneer program in 2008-09. She captained Loras's soccer team for two years, 2006-07. A former Bettendorf (Iowa) High School Female Athlete of the Year, she was a three-time all-state athlete. She has been the assistant varsity and head JV coach at Dubuque Wahlert for the past three seasons and has also been a head coach with the Dubuque Soccer Club since 2005. Sanyi has been involved in a number of clinics, including one of her own in Bettendorf. She earned her bachelor’s of science degree from Loras in May, 2008, with a major in exercise science.
The Pioneer men earned the school's first-ever NCAA III playoff berth and subsequent victory, 1-0 over Wartburg. The Pioneers were 14-5-1 in 2008, while the women were 9-9-2, a six-game improvement from the previous year.
The UWP women report to campus Aug. 18, with the men coming in three days later.
An interim assistant coach will be added to the Pioneer staff prior to the teams' arrivals.
