Laurie Trifone earned her second WIAC award

UW-Platteville's Laurie Trifone and Sarah Gengler earned spots on the all-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference soccer team.

Trifone, a senior goalkeeper from Dubuque (Wahlert High School), and Gengler, a junior defender from Hartford, helped the Pioneers hold opponents to 1.7 goals per game with five shutouts.

Trifone became just the second Pioneer, next to Jessi Jones in 2000-03, to earn multiple first team honors. She was also a 2005 honoree. During her four-year career, she logged 6,488 minutes in the net and recorded 468 saves, the third-highest in school history. She was the keeper for 27 career wins, of which 16 were shutouts.

"Laurie's been a pillar, especially this year, even though she was plagued by injuries," First-Year Pioneer Coach Enzo Fuschino said. "She came up big, day in and day out, game in and game out. She's also one of those players who was a good leader on the field and directed the defense."

Gengler was the sweeper for a tough defense that held seven of the eight conference opponents to one goal or less.

"To be a good sweeper, you have to be able to read the game, and Sarah reads well and reacts so well," Fuschino said. "We even moved her up to forward when we were having trouble scoring and she scored a couple of goals for us. She was also good at directing traffic on the field. She knows the game very well."

The young Pioneers were 1-6-1 in league play and 3-13-5 overall.

"Despite having a young and inexperienced group, with a third of the team new, we exceeded my expectations," Fuschino said. "Except for a couple of games, we played with everyone. The best part is they still had smiles on their faces. They worked hard all year, and we're looking forward to next year. We'll have a good base to build on. We'll miss our seniors, but the returning base here is very respectable and makes me look forward to the next season."
