In the 15-year history of Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer, the league generally served as the Washington Generals to UW-Stevens Point's Harlem Globetrotters play.
The Pointers have rolled up a staggering 96-4-6 record during that time, including 19 straight wins over UW-Platteville. Seventeen of those wins against the Pioneers had come via shutout.
All that changed, however, for UW-Platteville Sunday in Stevens Point.
The Pioneers rallied to tie the Pointers 1-1, then goalkeeper Laurie Trifone came up with two big saves in the second overtime to make UWP history.
Both teams are now 5-1-2 overall and undefeated in league play. The upstart Pioneers are 1-0-2 in the WIAC, while the Pointers are 1-0-1.
Amanda Pramat gave the Pointers a 1-0 lead at 61:55, but the Pioneers tied the score 14 minutes later thanks to a pair of freshmen. Kim Schneckloth took a pass from Allie Metcalfe and scored from the top of the penalty box, burying the ball in the right corner of the net.
The Pioneers almost pulled off an even bigger stunner, but had a goal disallowed with 1:26 in the second overtime by an off-sides call.
All-WIAC goalkeeper Trifone made a finger-tip save on one shot and stuffed a breakaway attempt on another to preserve the tie.
The Pioneers play host to Maranatha Baptist Bible College Monday at 6 p.m.
