The UW-Platteville women's soccer team broke a 16-game losing streak to UW-La Crosse when the Pioneers tied the Eagles 0-0 in a double-overtime contest Wednesday in La Crosse.
The game marked the first-time ever that the Eagles had not defeated the Pioneers since UWP began the sport in 1992.
"With the win over UW-River Falls last year (for the first time ever) and with this tie, it says a new era of women's soccer is here," Pioneer Coach Chris Bianchi said. "I'm just real proud of the team. They are believing in themselves."
The Pioneers had two shots on goal to the Eagles' one in the first half, then held off UW-L's charges in the second half and overtime. All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference goalkeeper Laurie Trifone stopped nine shots in goal.
"We had a lot of good performances, like Elisa Schulenberg coming off the bench to play defense," Bianchi said. "It wasn't just one person, though. Everyone played well."
UW-Platteville is now 5-1-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the WIAC, while the Eagles are 2-2-2, 0-1-1.
The Pioneers will now face powerful UW-Stevens Point Sunday on the road at 2 p.m.. The Pointers are 19-0 lifetime against the Pioneers and 95-4-6 all-time in conference play.
