St. John Fisher made a first-half goal stand up, and the host school edged UW-Platteville 1-0 in an evenly-played women's soccer game Sunday.
Fisher, who had won its opener 8-0, scored on a Kelly Zeppetella free kick 32:40 into the game. The Pioneers, playing their opening game, had nine shots, including four on goal, but were stone-walled each time.
Freshmen Ashly Hamilton and Kim Schneckloth combined for seven shots for the Pioneers, with Hamilton having three on goal.The Pioneers were playing at the alma mater of Coach Chris Bianchi and within walking distance of Athletic Director Mark Molesworth's parents in Rochester, N.Y.
The Pioneer women play in the Milwaukee area twice this week, facing Wisconsin Lutheran Wednesday and Milwaukee School of Engineering Thursday. Both games begin at 7 p.m.
