Pioneers show no letup

The UW-Platteville women's soccer team showed no signs of letting up, as the Pioneers defeated Maranatha Baptist Bible College 3-0 Monday night at Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium.

The Pioneers, who tied UW-La Crosse Wednesday and UW-Stevens Point Sunday in emotional and draining games, used two Allie Metcalfe goals and one by Erin McDonald to get past the Crusaders. The Pioneers out-shot their visitors 28-1, taking 13 shots on goal while not allowing a single shot on their own net.

UWP continued its best start ever at 6-1-2, already beating their win totals from eight of their previous 14 seasons in school history.

Metcalfe scored her first goal on a header from a well-placed corner kick by Ashly Hamilton. Metcalfe then assisted McDonald with a short pass in the box, giving the Pioneers a 2-0 halftime lead.

When Metcalfe blasted a rebound shot into the goal 2:20 into the second half, Coach Chris Bianchi substituted everyone off the bench. The reserves continued to force the action, coming close on several scoring attempts.

The Pioneers will play a makeup game at Dubuque on Thursday at 8 p.m. Their next home game is Saturday at 7 p.m. vs. Ripon.
