Pioneers blank Cornell, 2-0

With two near picture-perfect goals, the UW-Platteville women's soccer team defeated Cornell 2-0 in the first Sunday night soccer game ever played at Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium.

Allie Metcalfe stole a ball and made a long run upfield, then fired from left to right for the Pioneers' first goal. Ashly Hamilton then scored on a header after a crossing pass from close to the sideline from Ashley Hanson.

The two first-half goals were more than enough for the Pioneers, who tied the school record of nine victories. UWP is now 9-3-2 on the year, while Cornell fell to 5-5-1.

The Rams' Shawns Becker stopped seven shots in the net, while UWP's Laurie Trifone saved both Cornell shots on goal.

The Pioneers are back at home Saturday at 11:30 a.m. vs. WIAC leader UW-Eau Claire.
