Because of the recent heavy rains, soccer fields in Dubuque, Iowa, are not playable, forcing changes in the UW-Platteville schedules.
The Pioneer games scheduled for today (Tuesday) at the University of Dubuque, have been postponed. The women will face the Spartans Sept. 28 at 8 p.m., and the men will make the 22-mile trip to Dubuque Oct. 6 for a 5 p.m. match.
In addition, Thursday's scheduled doubleheader vs. Clarke College has been moved to UW-Platteville's Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium to take advantage of the Pioneers' ProGrass surface. The 3-1 Pioneer women will face the 2-3 Crusaders at 6:30 p.m., while the 3-0 UWP men face 4-1 Clarke at 8:30 p.m.
The matchup with Clarke will also bring one of UW-Platteville's all-time greats back to his alma mater. Sean Esterhuizen (played at UWP in 1978-79,'82-83) is the Crusaders' new coach. He scored 53 goals and had 37 assists during his illustrious Pioneer career.
Esterhuizen and Pioneer Coach Chris Bianchi have initiated traveling trophies for the series. The men will play for the "Super Fred Cup", in honor of long-time Pioneer Coach Fred Eberlein, while the women will vie for the "Mississippi Cup," named for the river that marks the state borders of Iowa and Wisconsin.
