A spirited rally sparked by reserves fell just short as Simpson held off UW-Platteville 4-2 in men's soccer action Tuesday at the UWP Soccer Bowl.
The Pioneers fell behind the Storm 3-0 in the first 47 minutes, and a short time later Coach Chris Bianchi turned to the bench. The Pioneers responded by pushing the attack up into the Simpson end. Jon Olk scored on an assist from Ryan Whipple and the 59:42, and Jules Zinni placed a free kick perfectly in the corner of the net for another goal at 72:15. The Pioneers had several good scoring chances, only to be denied by Storm goalkeep Greg Velaszquez.
Simpson finally salted the game away in the final minute when Jesse Kaufman scored his second goal on a long breakaway against an empty Pioneer net.
Both teams are now 5-4-1 after the contest. The Pioneers play another home game Thursday against Mount Mercy at 3 p.m.
