UW-Platteville gave 23rd-ranked Wheaton all it could handle before the Thunder pulled away for a 2-1 men's soccer victory Tuesday night in Illinois.
Brandon Chmiel, on an assist from B.J. Gottschlich, gave the Pioneers a 1-0 lead over a team UWP had never defeated in nine previous games. Chmiel's second goal of the year came at the 30:59 mark in the first half.
The upset-minded Pioneers held that lead until the 50th minute, when Cameron Risma scored from 40 yards out. Eighteen minutes later, Matt Swartz scored off a rebound for a 2-1 Thunder advantage. The Pioneers had six shots on goal denied by Wheaton.
Wheaton improved to 6-2 overall, while the Pioneers fell to 3-4-1. UWP plays host to Ripon Saturday at 1 p.m.
