UW-Platteville stood toe-to-toe with fourth-ranked Loras Wednesday, battling the Duhawks to a 1-1 double-overtime tie before 375 entertained fans in the Rock Bowl.
Both teams came in 2-0, with the Pioneers ranked sixth in the NCAA III North Region and the Duhawks ranked first in the region and fourth nationally, and the game was played like one should between powerhouse teams.
"We're definitely happy with it," senior Tyler Holle said. "There were opportunities we could have put one in the back of the net to go up 2-1, but they're a great team, and it was a great result for us."
The Pioneers got on the board first, with Chris Brown scoring on an assist from Dan Howard at the 10:56 mark.
"It was a great ball in from Dan Howard," Brown said. "It was bouncing around, and I just got my foot on it, and it went in. It wasn't the most powerful shot, but it went in the corner. I'll take it...It was awesome to get that early start and let them know we were here to play. It was a fun game, and I was happy with it."
The Duhawks tied the score on a Chris Comstock goal at 36:05, and from then on the two teams took each other's best shots. UWP goalkeeper Kris Bosshart turned away four shots on goal, while Loras keeper Adam Kelsch made three saves over the 110-minute contest.
The Pioneers were helped by a large contingent of supporters who made the drive across the Mississippi River and into Iowa.
"Our fans were great," Holle said, "especially coming here to Loras. Their fans are always good, but I think that took a lot of the home-field advantage away and helped us out when we were tired there at the the end."
Both teams will share a field again Saturday, but against different teams. UW-Platteville is playing host to four games Saturday and two more Sunday.
The schedule is:
