UW-Platteville gave the home fans a good show, beating previously undefeated University of Dubuque 3-0 in the Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium opener.
The Pioneers out-shot the Spartans 17-2, getting off nine shots on goal. Brian Gottschlich scored early, heading a ball off a nice center pass from Devin Wallace 12 minutes into the game.
Eric Christensen gave the Pioneers an insurance goal at the 64:27 mark, tracking down a ball on the left side and blasting it in the nets. Exactly five minutes later, Ben Terpening scored on a penalty kick.
The Pioneers improved to 3-2 under first-year coach Enzo Fuschino and assistant Jude Blocker, the former Dubuque goalkeeper. The Spartans, who beat the Pioneers 3-0 last year, fell to 5-1 on the young season.
UWP returns to the stadium Saturday to face UW-Oshkosh in the Eberlein Cup game. The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m., but will follow the 1 p.m. football game and 5 p.m. women's contest.
