A Perfect 10! Pioneers set record

The UW-Platteville men's soccer team set a school record with its 10th consecutive win, a 5-0 victory over Maranatha Baptist Bible College Monday at Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium.

"It's just amazing," said co-captain Eric Sautbine, who scored two goals Monday. "It's the best start to a senior year you could ever ask for. Going into the first game of the year against St. John Fisher and being down and then going against Rochester, a top 15 team, I'd never dreamed we'd be 2-0. And now here we are at 10-0. It's just amazing to me."

Sautbine started Monday's scoring just 4:25 into the contest, knocking in a rebound shot of Ben Terpening. Alex Albright drilled one home five minutes later, and the Pioneers rode the 2-0 lead into halftime.

Albright assisted on Sautbine's and Terpening's goals 1:16 apart early in the second half, and then Michael Volle finished the scoring by converting a penalty kick.

The Pioneers are 10-0, topping the 1983 team's nine-game winning streak.

"I've been here for four years, and that's been one of our goals," co-captain Patrick Little said. "We've wanted to make the NCAA tournament, and we wanted to get the wins record. So far, so good. We have the all-time best start. Now we just have to keep winning games for the other ones."

The Pioneers will get a chance to make a major statement Wednesday, when they host perennial power UW-Whitewater at 7 p.m.

"For once, I think we can match up with them straight up," Little said. "In the past, we've had to shadow or mark up special people or pack it in. This year, we're actually going to be able to play them straight up, and it should be one heck of a match."

The Warhawks have defeated the Pioneers four straight times. UWP last won 3-1 in 2001. The Warhawks won the next three games via shutout and then captured last year's game 3-2 in overtime.

"We have to play a lot better in that game," Sautbine said. "If we beat those guys, we'll be so pumped."
