Loras College nipped UW-Platteville 2-1 in a highly competitive men's soccer game Thursday night in Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium.
The Duhawks' Santiago Mejia scored on a penalty kick at 10:57, and Loras held that 1-0 lead at the half. The Duhawks went up at the 70:09, when Mike Richter got behind the Pioneer defense and scored at point-blank range. The Pioneer bench howled for off-sides, but to no avail.
Just 2:19 later, the Pioneers, who played much of the game without injured second-leading scorer Alex Albright, got on the board when Eric Christensen drilled a free kick home from 35 yards out. Both teams had several good runs throughout the rest of the game, but the Duhawks prevailed by the 2-1 count.
Loras improved to 12-3-1 overall, while the Pioneers dropped to 14-4.
Before its final home game, UWP saluted its three seniors: Patrick Little, Eric Sautbine and Steve Wise.
The Pioneers wrap up the 2006 season Sunday at 7 p.m. at UW-Oshkosh in the battle for the Eberlein Cup, named after Fred Eberlein, who guided the Pioneers to 207 wins before retiring after the 1997 season.
