The UW-Platteville men's soccer team registered one of the biggest wins in the program's 42-year history when the Pioneers stunned host and eighth-ranked University of Rochester (N.Y.) 2-1 to claim the Flower City Classic Sunday.
Rochester was ranked #7 by D3Kicks.com and #8 by the NSCAA (coaches' association) in pre-season polls. Last year, Rochester was 16-0 before losing in the second round of the NCAA III playoffs to St. Lawrence.
Ben Terpening was named the tournament Most Valuable Player after late-game heroics in both games. The sophomore from Waunakee, who scored with 18 seconds remaining Friday to tie the St. John Fisher contest, netted the game-winner Sunday with 3:09 to play. Terpening was taken down from behind on a break-away, earning a free kick. He scored from 20 yards out on the right side to give the Pioneers the lead.
Bryan Mark, a sophomore from Lakemoor, Ill., tied the game at 1-1 when he scored off a corner kick. Freshman Tyler Holle's corner was directed well outside the box where Mark ran on to it and drilled a shot to the low left corner under the dive of Rochester's Paco Corbalan at 61:34. Mark, who scored a goal Friday and assisted on Terpening's game-tying shot, was named the tournament's offensive MVP.
Senior Steve Wise turned away four Rochester shots, including three in the second half.
(Thanks to Rochester SID Dennis O'Donnell for the descriptions of the goals.)
