UW-Platteville is celebrating Homecoming this week, with the theme of "Pioneers of the Caribbean. We Arrrgh the Best!!"
For 80 minutes Wednesday, the Pioneers had the "Arrrgh" part right before finally finding their treasure.
Despite out-shooting Viterbo by a 24-5 margin, it wasn't until Laity Loum scored with 9:26 to play that gave Pioneers a 1-0 win in Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium.
After being stymied by 6-foot-9 V-Hawk goalkeeper Brett May, the Pioneers scored when Ben Terpening shot a crossing pass from the right corner that Loum blasted in the nets for the game-winner.
May made 10 saves in the Viterbo net, while the UWP defense did not allow a shot on goal.
The Pioneers improved to 9-4-3 overall, while Viterbo slipped to 3-7-1.
UWP is back in the stadium Friday at 6:30 p.m. vs. Benedictine.
