When the first four soccer games at Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium have gone at least one overtime period, "persevere" becomes a key word. Such was the case for UW-Platteville forward Alex Albright, who scored the game-winning goal in the Pioneers' 3-2 victory over Coe Saturday afternoon.
Albright was stonewalled by Kohawk goalie Jumpei Tsuchikawa on his first attempt to end the game, but when the ball squirted loose, Albright stayed with the play and smacked home the game-winner 4:33 into the extra session.
The win was the Pioneers' first of the season, raising their record to 1-0-1. They also celebrated with a huge trophy, called the Rochester Cup. Both Pioneer Coach Chris Bianchi and Coe Coach Donovan Kron hail from that New York city and donated a trophy for the winner.
Jeremy Kastner scored in the first half for the Pioneers, while Eric Sautbine nailed a penalty shot with 28:25 to play. Coe's Sho Ito answered with a penalty goal with just over five minutes left to tie the game, necessitating the extra period.
The Pioneers play at Mount Mercy Monday at 2 p.m.
