Michelle Ebert tied for seventh place

The first-ever UW-Platteville Invitational earned rave reviews from the competitors, and the home team fared pretty well, too.

The Pioneers placed third in the eight-team event, won by UW-Stevens Point with a 691. UW-Whitewater scored 702, UWP 754, UW-Superior 777, Viterbo 785, Carroll 797, Ripon 803, and UW-River Falls 828.

"The event went real well," Pioneer Coach Pete Reif said. "Everybody was happy with the golf course. It's certainly a good test of your short game and keeping the golf ball down the middle. The scores for most schools were 10 to 15 strokes higher than what their averages are. I thought the weather was great, too."

Michelle Ebert tied for seventh place, firing a two-day total of 180. Caitlin Cook shaved six strokes off her score on Sunday to finish 11th at 184, while Kerrie Liske was 13th at 186, and Tricia Pawelski 26th at 204.

The Pioneers were without injured Penny Case, meaning all four UWP golfers counted in the scoring.

"When playing five and counting four, if someone is not doing as well, there's the perception that someone has your back and you can relax a little bit," Reif said. "It was harder on the players. Also, being at home and with expectations of doing well, they put pressure on themselves."

With all that, the coach was happy with the Pioneers' placing.

"They played pretty well," Reif said. "They certainly can play better. They showed that earlier in the year at Eau Claire, where the golf course is similiar and we broke 350. I figured us at third place, and we took third place. We held our own and kept Superior at bay. I'm real happy with how they finished, knowing they can always do better."
