The largest women's golf team in UW-Platteville history begins play Saturday and Sunday at the UW-Eau Claire Invitational.

Two-time WIAC Coach of the Year Peter Reif, the only coach in the program's nine-year history, welcomed eight players into the new season.

Junior Michelle Ebert (Kenosha/Bradford) and sophomores Penny Case (Lancaster) and Julie Chapman (Racine/Case) are joined by freshmen Kayla Britton (Westby), Brianna Cable (Eau Claire/Memorial), Caitlin Cook (Freeport, IL), Abbie Lepke (New London/Fox Valley Lutheran) and Tricia Pawelski (Madison/Edgewood).

"It's certainly a nice position to be in," said Reif of the larger squad. "Our practices are much more competitive. We should be improved this year."

The Pioneers, who were seventh in last year's conference race, look to make a move up the standings.

"We're still very young, as we will be playing with two or three freshmen, but we certainly have some upside," Reif said.
