The UW-Platteville football team had 143 players report to practice Saturday for the 2009 season, and after a day of testing, took to the field for the first time Monday.

"We really have two teams right now," Pioneer Coach Mike Emendorfer said after Monday's practices. "We have all our new players practicing in the morning, learning the offense, defense and special teams systems. Then we have a good group of returning players (in the afternoon) refreshing themselves in those concepts we used in the past as well as learning the new wrinkles we've put in. We're at the learning stage. We feel we have a good team, but we'll wait and see the next few days as to what type of team we have. They came into camp in good shape, and they seem excited. This is probably one of the stronger and quicker teams we have had."

The Pioneers come together as one team Friday for a pair of practices and then have the Orange and Blue Intrasquad Scrimmage Saturday. The free event, which is open to the public, begins at 3 p.m.

"The intrasquad scrimmage will mainly be for the young players and those battling for positions," Emendorfer said. "You won't see guys like Aunton Terry taking too many reps, and we're not going to game-plan to get the ball to our main players. It's a chance for many of our younger players to get some opportunities and see how they react in a full-look scrimmage. It gives us a good chance to evaluate players."
