UW-Platteville recorded its first league shutout in 16 years, stopping UW-River Falls 7-0 Saturday at Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium.
Joe Burkeland's 30-yard scamper in the second quarter accounted for the only scoring, as the Pioneers earned their first Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory of the season. UWP is now 3-5 overall and 1-4 in the WIAC. The Falcons slipped to 3-5, 2-3.
First-year defensive coordinator Rob Erickson's unit allowed the Falcons inside the red-zone only twice all afternoon, and both those drives ended in turnovers. Quincy Hudson picked off a pass at the goal-line in the first quarter, and the junior defensive back recovered a fumble at the 19 in the third after a hit by Randy Langer.
UWRF drove to the Pioneer 27 with 2:08 to play but were stopped on downs. Coach Mike Emendorfer's club then ran out the clock.
Sophomore quarterback Burkeland became the first Pioneer to rush for 100 yards this season, as he gained 125 on 17 carries. UWP out-gained the Falcons 301-290 in the defensive battle.
Storm Harmon threw for 192 yards, including 8-83 to Michael Zweifel, but was tackled for 24 yards in losses.
Joe Tinucci, Eric Jensen, David Akey, Dustin Moor and Langer each had seven tackles, with Akey and Langer making two sacks.
The shutout was the first WIAC blanking for the Pioneers since a 10-0 win over UW-River Falls in 1992. It was their first overall shutout since beating Dubuque 26-0 to open the 2005 season.
