The good news: UW-Platteville plays no more Homecoming games.
The Pioneers lost a Homecoming game for the third straight week, this time to UW-La Crosse 37-6 at Winona State's Maxwell Field. The Pioneers, who lost their own Homecoming to UW-Stout Oct. 4, and at UW-Stevens Point Oct. 11, fell to 2-4 overall and 0-3 with their third straight loss. The Eagles, winners of 22 of their last 23 Homecoming contests, improved to 1-5, 1-2.
UW-L quarterback Nick Anker completed 18 of 21 passes for 242 yards and ran for two short scores, and the Eagle defense recorded seven sacks to key the win.
The Pioneers took a 6-3 lead when Jon Martin capped a 47-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run. The Eagles blocked the extra-point, and Dan Sellers returned it for a two-point score. After the Pioneer kickoff, the Eagles went 69 yards, finished by Ankers' three-yard TD run. Cory Bougie kicked his second field goal with 2:32 to play in the second quarter for a 16-6 halftime lead.
Eric Donoval, who also had 106 yards rushing, returned a punt 84 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter, and Anker and Reid Oldenburg added one-yard TD runs in the fourth.
The seven sacks--counted against rushing totals in the college game--gave the Pioneers minus-18 yards on the ground. Quarterbacks Joe Burkeland (14-23) and Mitch Shadley (7-12) combined for 234 passing yards. Paul Pridemore caught eight passes for 93 yards to lead the Pioneers, while the Eagles' Travis Bordeau gained 119 yards on seven receptions.
The game was played in Winona as UW-L's Veterans' Memorial Stadium is being rebuilt.
The Pioneers play host to UW-Eau Claire Saturday at 1 p.m.
