UW-Stout beat UW-Platteville 46-31 in the highest scoring Homecoming game in Pioneer history Saturday in front of 3,133 at Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium.

The Blue Devils scored the first 20 points of the second half, breaking open a tight first half in which Stout led 19-17. The 77 combined points were the most in 80 Homecoming games, topping the 74 points in the Pioneers' 56-18 win over UW-Whitewater in 1976.

The Pioneers took a 7-0 lead after their opening drive on Mike Genslinger's one-yard scoring run. The Blue Devils went ahead 9-7 on two Pioneer punting mistakes, a snap out of the end zone for a safety and Carlos Concepcion's 24-yard return of a blocked punt.

The Pioneers' Tony Smidl (33 yards) and the Blue Devils' Kyle Martin (34) exchanged field goals, and Stout moved ahead 19-10 on Patrick Mengelkoch's four-yard scoring pass from Kyle Provos. UWP answered with Joe Burkeland's four-run run with 56 seconds left in the wild first half.

The second half was all Stout's, as the Blue Devils added two more Martin field goals, sandwiched around a Provos' 49-yard bomb to Eric Cieslak in the third quarter. Concepcion ran in from three yards out early in the fourth quarter for a 39-17 lead.

John Akim, in a relief role, passed 15 yards to Nick Grosso with 11:05 to play, making the count 39-24, but Stout answered with a 70-yard drive. Craig Warminksi rushed for an 11-yard touchdown and a 46-24 Stout advantage. Akim threw seven yards to Paul Pridemore with 3:05 remaining for the final 46-31 score.
