UW-Stout returned two interceptions and a punt for touchdowns to beat UW-Platteville 28-7 in a game delayed twice by lightning Saturday in Menomonie.

Jordan Schumacher returned a first-quarter punt 38 yards for a touchdown, and Chad Parker brought back a second-quarter interception 27 yards for a 14-0 Blue Devil lead. The Pioneers cut the deficit in half, when Michael Schmidt hit Craig Patterson on a 17-yard scoring strike with 3:14 remaining in the first half.

UWP was going towards the tying score early in the third quarter, but Matt Kuenzli picked Schmidt off and brought the ball back 62 yards for a touchdown. Andy Reese added a 12-yard score with 1:02 left after the Pioneers were forced to go on fourth down deep in their own territory.

The Pioneers (1-3 overall, 0-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) out-gained the Blue Devils (2-2, 1-0) 345-234 and had 23 first downs to Stout's 12. Mike Genslinger rolled up his third 100-yard rushing effort of the year, gaining 128 yards, while Patterson caught six passes for 102 yards. The Pioneers, however, were done in by five turnovers, the punt return and a 41-yard touchdown pass to Aunton Terry that was nullified by a penalty.

Nolan Krajco led a strong defensive effort with 13 tackles, while Eric Jensen and Justin Athey each made eight. Matt Eastlick recovered a fumble, and Morgan May returned an interception 27 yards.

The game was stopped twice in the third quarter by lightning, with the delays totaling 50 minutes.

The Pioneers play host to undefeated UW-Stevens Point Saturday for Homecoming with a 2 p.m. kickoff.
