Augustana scored the final 17 points of the game and beat UW-Platteville 34-24 Saturday in Rock Island, Ill.
The 29th-ranked Vikings overcame the Pioneers' 24-17 lead with touchdown runs of one yard by Josh Galliart (2:21 left in the third quarter) and of 26 by Jake Parke (4:23 left in the fourth), both ending 72-yard drives. They sandwiched a Ryan Gibbons 47-yard field goal, which came with 9:19 remaining in the contest.
UWP's Craig Patterson caught two touchdown passes from Michael Schmidt. The first was a 26-yard score that gave the Pioneers a 17-10 lead 17 seconds before halftime, and the second a 28-yard hookup with 6:37 remaining in the third quarter for the 24-17 lead. The Vikings then gained 201 yards and scored 17 points on their next three drives.
Augustana improved to 2-1, while the Pioneers fell to 1-2.
Mike Genslinger scored a 15-yard touchdown run and Tony Smidl kicked a 19-yard field goal in the first half for the Pioneers. Genslinger rushed for 96 yards on 21 carries, just missing his third straight 100-yard game. Schmidt completed 28of 41 passes for 210 yards, including 11 for 73 yards to Grosso and 9 for 54 yards to Dan Schwartz. Grosso also completed a two-point conversion pass to Patterson right before halftime.
Jason Doestch carried the ball 16 times for 84 yards for Augustana, while quarterback Ryan McGinnis ran for 62 yards and passed for 138, including a 38-yard touchdown to Henry Peters four minutes into the game. Parke finished with a pair of rushing touchdowns.
The Pioneers' Matt Eastlick led all tacklers with 13, including 12 solo stops. David Pietrowiak and Morgan May each made 8 solo tackles. Dan Hilby had a pair of quarterback sacks for Augustana.
UW-Platteville opens Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Saturday at UW-Stout in Menomonie, beginning at 1 p.m.
