| Akey gets one of his four blocked kicks |
Posted 11/14/07
Five UW-Platteville players earned all-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football honors, including first-team selection David Akey, a defensive lineman.
Mike Genslinger and Marcis Davidson earned second-team picks, while Corey Darmody and Matt Eastlick gained honorable mention status.
Akey, a junior from Merrill, made 47 tackles, including six stops for losses. He came up with big momentum-changing plays throughout the season, blocking four kicks and recovering two fumbles. A consistent performer, he had at least five tackles in six contests, including a career-high 8 at UW-Stout. In three seasons, Akey has 127 tackles, including 15 behind the line of scrimmage.
Akey is the first Pioneer defender since safety Brian Childs and linebacker Tim Duffy in 1999 to garner first team defensive honors.
Despite missing a contest due to an injury, Genslinger (Jr., Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley) ran for 979 yards, one of the top single-season marks in Pioneer history. He scored 10 rushing touchdowns, fifth in the WIAC, caught 18 passes for 116 yards and competed two passes for 64 more yards. Genslinger, who gained 1,028 yards as a sophomore, was a first-team selection last year. His 4.9 yards per career carry is the second-best mark in Pioneer history.
Linemen Darmody (Sr., Allenton/Kewaskum) and Davidson (Sr., Waunakee) have now earned multiple all-WIAC awards. Darmody was honored by the league coaches for the third straight year, and Davidson for the second. They helped the Pioneers average 363.6 yards per game, despite playing with four different quarterbacks this season, and recorded the first four-game stretch of scoring more than 30 points since 1969. The versatile Darmody started at tackle, guard and center, moving around after injuries hit the line. Davidson was a rock at the right tackle position.
Eastlick (Sr., Belmont) led the Pioneer defense in tackles for the second straight season. The linebacker finished eighth in the conference with 56 solo and 25 assisted stops. He had a career-best 12 solo tackles at Augustana. Eastlick concluded his standout Pioneer career with 220 tackles and a pair of all-conference awards.
