The UW-Platteville men's cross country team showed how important each and every runner is Saturday, as the Pioneers finished second in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships Saturday at UW-Whitewater.

The Pioneers, ranked 11th in NCAA Division III, scored 64 points to tie fifth-ranked and defending conference champion UW-Stevens Point. Third-ranked UW-La Crosse won its 30th league title with 26 points.

The UW-Platteville women, behind all-conference runner Alli Tank, were fifth in the nine-team league meet.

Four Pioneer men earned all-conference honors, led by first team honoree Jason Garvens, who was runner-up in 25:35 over 8,000 meters. Tony Kilburg and Patrick Klein both ran to second team honors, with Kilburg taking 8th in 26:02 and Klein 11th in 26:07. Aaron Whalen was an honorable mention selection, finishing 19th in 26:20. Nathan Petesch's 24th-place finish in 26:26 helped the Pioneers to the runner-up team finish. Matt Hoefs was 31st in 26:38, and Shane Lacey 37th in 26:46.

Tank brought home second team all-WIAC honors after placing 14th with a time of 23:30 over 6,000 meters. Molli Springer was 25th in 24:04; Eileen McGuine 29th in 24:13; Lacey Curtis 41st in 24:58; Carin Lowe 42nd in 25:07; Emily Flood 43rd in 25:08; and Gina Smith 47th in 25:27. The Pioneers were without injured runner Ann Tank again, as she will probably be shut down until the track season. UW-Eau Claire was the women's team champion for the third straight year.

An All-Sportsmanship Team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season.  UWP's Greg Alleman and Alli Tank were honored at the championships.

The Pioneers will return to action on Nov. 14 in the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional at Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winneconne.  The NCAA Division III Championship is scheduled for Nov. 21 in Highland Hills, Ohio.
