The 23rd-ranked UW-Platteville men's cross country team raced to third place while the regionally-ranked Pioneer women were fifth in their respective meets at the 11th annual Don Huston Invitational, hosted by Wartburg Saturday.
The UWP men, with five runners in the top 26, scored 94 points. Third-ranked UW-La Crosse won the 11-school meet with 43 points, followed by 15th-ranked Augustana with 62.
Sophomore Patrick Klein turned in an eighth-place finish to pace the Pioneers. He finished the 8K course in 26:07. Tony Kilburg was 18th in 26:31; Joshua Melby, 21st in a career-best 26:38; Tim Dahms, 22nd in 26:49, also a personal-best; and Matt Hoefs, 26th in 27:02 to account for the scoring. Shane Lacy was 33rd in 27:24, and Greg Alleman 52nd in 27:59.
The host Knights won the women's race with 43 points, followed by UW-L Crosse with 80, St. Olaf 95, Central 135, and UWP 149.
Jessica Scott raced to third place in a time of 22:16 over 6,000-meters, followed by Ann Tank, 14th at a career-best 23:21; Alli Tank, 27th at 23:41; Lacey Curtis,51st in a personal-best 25:05; Trista Baye, 54th in 25:17; Katie Binning, 72nd in 28:45; and Emily Flood, 73rd in 28:54.
The Pioneers are ranked seventh in the NCAA III Midwest Region.
UW-Platteville is back in action Saturday at UW-La Crosse in a the final tuneup for most of the team prior to the Nov. 1 WIAC Championships.
