Corey Stelljes nipped Tyler Sigl by one second in a battle of NCAA III national champions at the UW-Platteville Alumni Cross Country Race Saturday at Memorial Park.
Stelljes, the 2003 10,000-meter national champion, edged Sigl, the 2007 champion in the same event, 21:43 to 21:44 in an exciting finish. UW-Platteville professor John Mirth was third, while UWP freshman Pat Klein was fourth.
In the women's race, Wisconsin Badger Leah Coyle won the 4,000-meter race in 15:29. Jessica Scott was the top UWP student, finishing second in 15:44. UWP athletes were running unattached as their season officially begins next Saturday at St. Olaf.
