Sigl, Taddy take titles

UW-Platteville's Tyler Sigl and Marcia Taddy became the first runners from the same school to win individual Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference cross country titles since 2000 when they won their respective races at the 2006 championships at Maple Grove Country Club in West Salem Saturday.

They led the Pioneers to one of their best-ever combined days in the WIAC. The men turned in their third straight top three finish by placing third, while the women had their highest-finish ever at fourth place.

Sigl successfully defended his title, as the junior from Seymour covered the 8,000 meters in 25:10. He beat UW-Oshkosh's Willy Kaul by seven seconds and gave the Pioneers the individual title for the fourth time in five years. Ryan Kleimenhagen won back-to-back crowns in 2002 and 2003.

Taddy became the second Pioneer to win the women's race, joining Amy Abing, who won in 1993. Taddy finished 6,000 meters in 21:40, coming from behind to beat UW-La Crosse's Kristen Painter by four seconds. The senior from Two Rivers turned in her third straight top 10 finish.

Coach Tom Antczak had his top five men finish in the top 27, with four earning all-WIAC honors. Nick Fulton was 15th in 26:16, Aaron Whalen 16th in 26:18, Kyle Stangel 17th in 26:19 and Cam Klein 27th in 26:46.

For the women, Emma Dreis earned second-team all-WIAC honors by placing 12th in 23:07. The top seven runners earn first-team all-WIAC honors, while those finishing eighth through 14 earn second team. Runners 15 through 20 are honorable mention picks.
