Pioneers run to titles at Wartburg

UW-Platteville won three of the four individual titles, and the Pioneer men captured the team crown on a successful Saturday at the ninth annual Don Hutson Invitational at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa.

Junior Tyler Sigl's winning run led the Pioneers to the championship of the 8,000-meter race. On the women's side, sophomore Emma Dreis won the 6,000-meter run, while senior Marcia Taddy won the 4,000-meter competition.

The Pioneer men took four of the top seven places to run away with the title. Sigl won the race in 26:04, while Kyle Stangel (26:27), Aaron Whalen (26:38) and Nick Fulton (26:45) took fifth through seventh place. Russ Goessl rounded out the team scoring by placing 17th in 27:22. The Pioneers totalled 36 points, ahead of second-place Wartburg's 49.

Dreis led the Pioneers to a third-place finish in the 6,000-meter team standings. She won the individual title with a 23:31 time. Jessica Scott was third overall in 24:01, while freshman Eileen McGuine was eighth in 24:23. Taddy covered the 4,000 meters in 14:21, winning in four seconds.

The women scored 62 points to place third in the longer race behind Wartburg (50) and UW-La Crosse (52). The Pioneers were ninth of 16 teams in the 4K race.

The UWP men were seventh of 12 teams in the 4,000-meter race, with Cam Klein turning in the top finish, 25th in 12:54.
