The nationally-ranked UW-Platteville men's and women's cross country teams began their seasons in highly successful fashions Saturday, sweeping the UW-Whitewater DIII Challenge Saturday.
Led by the one-two punch of Marcia Taddy and Jessica Scott, the women scored 30 points to win the five-team meet. UW-Whitewater was second with 60, UW-Stevens Point third with 65, Augustana fourth with 78, and Dubuque fifth with 136.
Taddy crossed the 5,000-meter course in 19:27 to claim the individual title, while Scott was second in 19:48. Lindsey Vick and Emma Dreis were sixth and seventh, respectively, both in times of 19:56, and Eileen McGuine rounded out the scoring at 14th in 21:00.
The Pioneer men took five of the top seven spots to defend their UWW title. Tyler Sigl won the individual title for the second year in a row, finishing 8,000 meters in 27:07. Nick Fulton was third in 27:49, Kyle Stangel fourth in 27:58, Aaron Whalen sixth in 28:10, and David Chancellor seventh in 28:16.
The Pioneer men are ninth nationally, while the women are ranked 30th.
Both teams will compete in the Griak Invitatational next Saturday at the University of Minnesota.
