Pioneers run strong at Griak Invitational

The University of Wisconsin-Platteville cross country teams made strong showings at the Roy Griak Invitational Saturday at the Les Bolstad Golf Course Course at the University of Minnesota.

The Pioneer women were fourth out of 32 teams, while the men were fifth out of 52 teams in one of the Midwest's premier events.

Tyler Sigl successfully defended his individual title, beating 508 other runners. Sigl crossed the finish line in 25:34, breezing to the title by a whopping 17 seconds. Aaron Whalen was 39th in 26:55, Kyle Stangel 44th in 27:00, Nick Fulton 51st in 27:06, and Cam Klein 89th in 27:32.

Concordia (CA) won the team title in the Division II/III race with 46, followed by UW-La Crosse with 80, Minnesota State-Mankato 158, Wartburg 206 and UWP 224. The Pioneers finished ahead of the other four conference schools entered in the mega-event.

Carleton took the women's title with 114 points, nipping St. Thomas, who had 116. North Central was third with 149, and UWP fourth with 159.

Marcia Taddy was second overall in 23:09, moving up from eighth place last year. Lindsey Vick was 22nd in 24:15, Emma Dreis 23rd at 24:16, Jessica Scott 40th in 24:44 and Eileen McGuine 72nd in 25:23.
