UW-Platteville's Tyler Sigl won the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference cross country race Saturday, leading the Pioneers to third place in the team standings.
Sigl won the race in 25:02 at the Nemadji Golf Course in Superior, winning the title by nine seconds. His win marked the third time in four years the individual champion has worn the Pioneer orange and blue. Ryan Kleimenhagen won titles in 2002 and 2003.
The Pioneer men finished third or better for the third time in the last four championships as well. UW-La Crosse won the team with 25 points, while UW-Oshkosh had 78, the Pioneers 86, UW-Whitewater 87, UW-Stevens Point 112, UW-Stout 197, UW-River Falls 218, UW-Eau Claire 223 and host UW-Superior 257.
The UWP women matched their best finish in school history, taking fifth place behind Marcia Taddy's all-conference performance.
UW-La Crosse was the women's champion with 38 points, followed by UW-Stevens Pont at 55, UW-Oshkosh 105, UW-Eau Claire 110, UW-Platteville 141, UW-River Falls 142, UW-Stout 144, UW-Whitewater 184 and UW-Superior 281.
Nick Fulton (25:53) joined Sigl on the all-conference team by placing 13th, while Kyle Stangel (26:00) missed by one spot, making a strong 15th-place showing. Fulton was awarded second-team all-WIAC accolades.
Cam Klein, Austen Scudder, Russ Goessl and Bob Dillis finished in a pack, placing 28th through 31st in just over 26:40 to complete the team effort.
Taddy was the fifth-place finisher in 22:33, marking the second straight year she earned first-team all-league honors and a two-spot improvement from 2004.
Freshman Jessica Scott grabbed 17th place in 23:31, while Lindsy Vick was 24th at 23:52, Steph Martin 47th in 25:49, Jessica Davis 48th in 25:04, Emma Dreis 52nd in 26:12, and Amanda Topper 53rd in 26:20 for the Pioneers.
